following the success of ‘ride’ with miss kittin, eminent sci+tec founder dubfire returns with another chaos-conjuring techno composition. previously the sole-preserve of his epic sense-blurring hybrid show, dubfire is finally unleashing ‘dust devil’… his first solo release in several years, ‘dust devil’ is all about precision momentum. a move that dubfire’s made his signature, you can physically feel movement and destination throughout. especially as we reach the short breakdown where the riff revolves faster and higher, providing space for the echoed stabs that whirl and twist around you intensely. as the drums re-ignite, the riff is suddenly converted into groove energy as the jack-minded persistence brings the elements back together with pure focus. this is what ali has to say… “this was an instrumental i had done that i wasn’t quite sure what to do with. it wasn’t strong enough for a lead single and it always felt as though there was something missing, perhaps a spoken or sung vocal. so i sort of put it out of my mind until it was time to compile the music for the hybrid show back in the summer of 2013. once i had the backbone of the set list, along with the visual look, there seemed to be a more defined mood and look. and when i happened upon this track again it seemed to have been tailor-made for this show. it was also nice to insert something no one had heard before to break things up a bit.

following releases on detroit underground, nachtstrom schallplatten, planet rhythm and blueprint records, gotshell releases his first ep on atrophic society. the colombian aficionado has been making waves across the world for his uncompromising take on the darker side of techno. his new ep ‘quarkcima’ is no different, with a thick slice of bass-heavy machine music made for late night body moving. ‘quarkcima’ follows a bleepy lead with layers of bass, building to a satisfying and tasteful crescendo, which steers clear of the tropes and uses frequencies to their fullest. it invokes a dark and foreboding atmosphere like a creeping black fog. first on remix duty is xhin, who takes the bleepy synth lead and twists it into a heavy-but-funky robotic jam, stark and cold on the surface but with plenty of heat underneath. jeff derringer takes the reins for the second remix, wielding the original parts masterfully into a dense, bassline-driven triplet groove that takes the vibe up a few notches. finally, label head vohkinne adds punch and percussion to his charged and clanging remix, which rounds out a fierce package in style. ‘quarkcima’ is four cuts of essential techno that will never leave your crate.

los angeles droid behavior celebrates its 15th anniversary with a two-part release from its principal artists. over the last 15 years, droid behavior constructed, developed and institutionalized the west coast techno scene with their lauded event series interface. the label droid recordings fol- lowed with the launch of its first release -negative 01-, a compilation of l.a. producers showcasing new perspectives from north american techno. the forthcoming compilation negative 02 explores the label s vision from the voices that have laid its foundation, from the dark and strange, to the slightly experimental, to streamlined dance floor tools. part 1 of the compilation delivers 4 tracks from l.a. techno stalwarts, leading with label head drumcell. with releases on clr, dystopian, detroit underground and his own experimental label bl__k noise, drumcell s channels his diverse sound into a pitch-black banger in -dividing- a thick chugging track with an undercurrent of hypnotic stabs, pads and vocals.. the second track features one of the techno s most celebrated artists - truncate. also known as audio injection, david flores turns in the ultimate dj tool with -down,- a mastery of sequence subtlety layered on this introspective production. droid cofounders and vrv label heads rai&#769,,,z contribute the most entrancing arrangement for negative 02 - -ephemeral beings- which warns of social decay and encourages positive change via this and dark and beautiful composition. longtime droid resident viktor carrillo offers his debut release for the label with -coma walk- an ingenious application of the goa sound in conjunction with clever fm synthesis which makes for highly effective mix addition. a second release will follow to celebrate this anniversary, featuring more from the droid family including luis flores, hyperactive, subversive and aaron litchke.

it took me a couple of years get invited to christophe de groot’s (aka circadian rhythms) homebase, and a couple more years to dive into his sonic archive. but time tells and basic moves 02 is what came out. the two tracks were recorded at earguard studio in brussels around 1996, at a moment when his interest was moving away from club music towards other golden musical horizons. “frequency” is a macro tech-house track in mid tempo.
i’m super happy i could archive it on wax because we almost fucked up the master dat tape by blowing up the player during a marathon listening session at his place. we had to open the device, unroll the tape across his house (full of records) and fold it back into the mini dat cassette. after a few hours and twenty metres of tape, the problem was solved and the tracks archived: “a dose of authenticity at a time of post-counter-cultural stagnation”. “house speaker call” originated in proto-techno forms. christophe never sees techno as a type of music but as a process. as a producer, collector and deejay he always dives deep into authentic forms of electronic music. deg’s antic personality shines out in the middle of the harsh beat-driven electro/techno track like a hopeful melody passing by on its elliptic orbit. tune your cells into his vibrations and get ready for these two timeless club tracks.

bottom forty s fifth release and second vinyl press showcases two french producers living and banging the drums in berlin, a long time bottom forty favorite, la fraicheur, teamed up with veteran producer and leonizer record label ownerleonard de leonard. la fraicheur, a producer of emotional and story-telling minimal techno, is seen here paired with leonard de leonard to turn up the heat on our first club-banger release track, -afraid of the groove-. la fraicheur and leonard de leonard beat the hell out of their analog elektron to lay out a relentless whipping melody that demands a twirling dance floor while a classic minimal bass line, rhythm and -she s uh-fraid of the groove- sample keep this track dark, dirty and underground. in a beautiful contrast to the heart-pounding a-side, flip to the b-side for -une place au soleil-. literally translated as -a place in the sun-, the saying is more about conveying the emotion of your hard work is putting you in a good place in life . -une place au soleil- is a gorgeous deep house track filled with teasingly melodic stabs and subtle hardware sounds that come and go, crashing on the record like powerful but soothing waves on the hot beach sands. while -afraid of the groove- may twist a peak-hour dance floor into a frenzy, -une place au soleil- will entrance them in the after hours, reminding dancers why electronic music is so beautiful and why dance floors can carry so much emotional release.

the 3rd record from pi electronics is by the rotterdam based, thessaloniki born producer, damcase. pi03 includes five original tracks of punky electro and techno, flavoured with damcase’s riffs and noisy aesthetic. sharp percussions, along with distorted grooves and broken beats, as well as some experimentation with voltage control techniques. the label reveals new colours on its palette, though not shifting away from its character.

titeltrack gahalowood bringt den fluss schnell ins rollen, dank einer stoischen kickdrum und drängelnden synthies – aber es sind diese vocals, die einen wirklich in den strudel hineinziehen und von atmosphärischen tupfern zur lautstark gehauchten hymne ausarten, getränkt mit all der matten romantik einer 80er welleband.
auf der kehrseite scheint flash pool ähnlich investiert in die menschliche stimmgewaltlosigkeit und mischt das intime groovegeflüster in den vordergrund – nimmt dann aber eine unerwartete wendung in psychedelisches kuhglockenterritorium, wo wilde bleeps auf den wiesen umherstromern und hooklines auf den seltsamsten bäumen wachsen. zum abschluss präsentiert heaven einen vergleichsweise geradlinigen house-bogen, kommt aber nicht umhin einiges an vertrippter güte zu erschnüffeln – in jedem fall dürfte der durst aufs klangabenteuer hier vollstens gestillt werden.

techno veteran adam-x dons his admx-71 moniker with three tracks of subterranean, cyborb, body music influenced slow grinding techno. tense, textured, and ready to explode all three tracks explore the dark present and future we are heading towards, with track titles like nuclear hysterics and dire situation the music goes hand in hand with the modern day chaos unfolding daily. properly heavy and dense there is still air letting the tracks breathe and develop as they slowly boil over scorching everything in their path. heavy!

occassional duo pjotr g & dubiosity have become household prruk names within short time. a couple of months after the well received “a man is no island” ep a new submission to the ever extended prrukblk catalog was provided in the form of “savant”, a 4 track spanning work of staggering techno with the significant filmic elements that pjotr g and dubiosity cleverly incorporate into their hazy works of techno. whereas the a side is based on these elements, on the b side darker elements are introduced. “savant” is a ferm but uplifting techno record.

with releases from lerosa, andy mac and piezo already under our belts, idle hands strides towards the summer with a transmission from a kindred spirit across the pond. area, sometimes known as m50, has been flying the flag for forward thinking electronic music in chicago for a long time. his radio shows on wnur have a distinctive quality one step to the side of the music his hometown is best known for, while his label kimochi sound has released incredible music from the likes of benjamin brunn, strategy and many more besides. as a producer area has been equally prolific since first emerging in 2007. from ethereal sound and steadfast to untilmyheartstops and sequencias, his various approaches to rhythm and texture are all bound together by a meditative quality that feels like a perfect fit for idle. on this single, both sides of the 12- continue the theme of dusty, dusky 4/4 area is most widely known for, locking on to a house groove while sporting the abstract atmosphere of techno. -rlgl- is an understated, emotional heater that uses looped up fragments as a counterpoint to the more lilting strings and static that bed the track. notice takes a more overtly melancholic approach with its lingering, heavily processed keys that drift in between a tough set of drums. theres a punch to the track that will translate beautifully to a big system, even as the melodics spell out a more intimate listening experience.

154 s cult 2004 album strike is being re-issued on the producer s own nwaq/ape label on heavyweight 180g vinyl. mixing up ambient, techno and abstract designs into deep, sci-fi influenced soundtracks, it still sounds as fresh and unique today as it did back then, and remains an expensive and in demand record on discogs as well as an important album that has influenced many producers since.

intergalactic, retro-futurist broken beat-ish track by legendary drum&bass producer seba teaming up with o persson under the east bound moniker. daniel savio follows with a laid-back spacey synth journey, spiced with a 70ies sci-fi flavor, yet with a modern approach. the b-side meanwhile takes off with a dark, yet progressive techno groover by young talent bonaca, ending with daniel araya s analogue-rich bomb, with a body-music type of vibe. operating under the radar, but romb records have so far been pushing an immensely diverse, yet cohesive soundscape of quality underground electronic music. the thirteenth release is no different, neatly summing up the label s genre-defying philosophy, presenting a four track collage of electronic mastery. that s how you do it!

the idea of purity is always recurring when talking about techno. although purism has long been relegated to a mere excuse for fear, when understood not as vindication of a certain dogma, but as a way of approaching creative expression, purity is, as a matter of a fact, inseparable from the genre. after all, techno is something like the pursuit of transcendence - either visceral, cerebral or spiritual - through the strictly necessary means only. the search of the truest forms by just outlining them. all of this brings us to the story of uniformity , orbe s first release for hivern. the 12 comes wrapped in a screen printed sleeve with design by arnau pi.

dark entries present -a tape-, a double lpof early work by helena hauff, a dj and record producer based in hamburg, germany. at university she studied fine art, physics, and systematic music science. she previously was a resident at hamburg s golden pudel club, where she hosted a night called birds and other instruments. as a selector she weaves energetically between electro, new wave, and ebm. her music, often recorded live in one take, has a raw intensity to it. she debuted with an ep on werkdiscs back in 2013 followed by records for lux_rec and bunker sublabel panzerkreuz as well as two collaborative eps for pan, produced under the name black sites with fellow pudel resident f#x. ‘a tape’ is a compilation of helena’s earliest recordings from 2011 and 2014, originally released on limited cassette by handmade birds in 2015. clocking in at over 50 minutes, this collection spans hauff’s musical universe, from jacking acid-techno to krautish zone-outs and scuzzy feedback interludes. it’s tempting to consider it helena’s debut album, but she views these tracks as mostly forgotten sketches left on the cutting room floor. it a gripping collection of deep, sinister analog synth sequences, industrial dissonance, and heavy percussion. her equipment set up was a roland alpha juno 2, juno 60, tb-303, tr-707 and tr-808. both of the discs end with hauff stepping outside of the intentionally stiff, robotic rhythms, instead showing her skill at crafting less conventional electronic sounds. all songs have been mastered by james plotkin with vinyl eq and lacquer cut by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the record is housed in a custom made jacket designed by eloise leigh, featuring a checkered graphic and black lines, highlighted by yellow and green for maximum visual tension. each copy includes a double-sided postcard with notes.

detroit s burden bros have long been looked upon with immense respect within contemporary dance music. having been in operation since 1990 with their 430 west imprint they have long encapsulated the forward thinking vibe of detroit techno with their output over the last 20+ years, gaining praise from their motor city peers as well as fans worldwide. having had success in the mainstream and an enduring underground presence they are well versed in the art of music. point blank , released on 430 west in 1996, feature some of the brothers deeper, more subdued, futuristic technoid grooves. not as driving as some of their other releases but retaining that burden groove for sure, forward thinking, intelligent techno from the d, 100%. 4 different versions of 2 tracks feature. each mix tweaking ever so slightly what came before. as usual, the dj s and the dancers are foremost in octave one s mind and this ep will be welcomed by both contingents, always classic, often imitated but never bettered! re-mastered, re-pressed and re-released in conjunction with the burden brothers / 430 west records, detroit usa.

this double-pack cymbolic originally came out in 1995 and found favour with electronic music fans who sought a deeper edge in their music. it s all here, the trademark drum programming, the epic sense that all of the burden bros productions have within them. this is dancefloor music, music for dj s to utilise, tools, but tools with the deepest soul imaginable. listen to terraforming or the symbiont - perfect examples of driving, almost tribal-esque rhythms fused with strings, synth pads and human feeling. cymbolic is for you if you re a fan of detroit techno, but it s also for those who enjoy the deepest electronic sounds. that s not to say it isn t funky though, these tracks will decimate most dance-floors, and therein lies the secret. essential

number 6 of the series introduces two further tracks of the sound adventure that superpitcher is taking us on this year. side a features protest song. if music is a way of transporting us to other places, protest song takes us to a desolate, scary and loveless environment, a burnt-down, burnt-out place where the flesh of its former inhabitants is smouldering, void of goodwill and kindness in a cloud of toxic and greedy smoke. it’s all kafka and orwell and suffering - the most twisted and eerie track so far in the golden ravedays saga. what is undeniably clear is an acute sense of regret and loss - a warning that it could have been avoided, had we only listened to our hearts and protested. in the same vein on side b we hear powerful resistance. produced after the paris attacks of 2015 superpitcher outdid himself with this strong message of resistance. where protest song paints a picture of under-worldly doom, resistance’s techno beat and insistent refrain sweeps us to the surface of the muck of hatred and intolerance we’ve politically been dumped in. a voice that seems like a trapped animal is calling out to us. what is it trying to say? is it crying out for help? is that animal all of us? resistance represents hope and encouragement and could be the perfect marching track to any demonstration against negative forces. much needed in this age of bigotry where it seems like time has leaped backwards to a darker side of history. as for the dancefloor – resistance is irresistible!

astray is the sublabel of away, berlin. away, berlin’s party series and the eponymous vinyl label celebrate the launch of its sublabel astray with the road force ep by discrete circuit. while away with previous contributions from joe claussell, mr. ties, and move d leans more to the housier side of things, astray will take a different path by taking some darker, techno-centered steps. following the idea only to release productions by both label founders, discrete circuit and h4l, as well as unique collaborations which either of them will form with outside artists, astrays second ep will premiere the joint studio work of discrete circuit and dj/producer blind observatory.
